ORWO NP-20, the standard in the former GDR when it came to black and white film. Thanks to its small grain and high contrast range, the NP20 became a welcome companion. Developed in the finest grain developer ORWO A49, the NP20 shows all its advantages. Now that the GDR has not existed for 35 years, remaining stocks are almost used up or are in poor condition due to their age. Even if stored well, fogging is to be expected. I have developed a method to still be able to use the film with good results. Basic haze is caused by the progressive aging process of the silver material. Storage that is too warm promotes this process even more. By making a small modification to the A49 developer and adjusting development parameters, it is still possible to achieve excellent results. At least considering the age of this footage.
By adding 1mm of “Moersch Restrainer” to 300ml of developer, the formation of the haze is reduced or almost prevented. By significantly lowering the ISO exposure to @25, the distance from the exposed image to the veil is greatly increased, resulting in a very usable negative. The frequent movement and the higher temperature make the image more consistent than with the standard values. I tried a lot here and found this to be the best variant.

ORWO NP-20, der Standard in der ehemaligen DDR in Sachen Schwarz-Weiss Film. Durch sein kleines Korn und dem hohen Kontrastumfang, wurde der NP20 zum gern gesehen Begleiter. Entwickelt im Feinstkornentwickler ORWO A49 spielt der NP20 all seine Vorteile aus. Nachdem die DDR nun seit 35 Jahren nicht mehr besteht, sind Restbestände fast aufgebraucht oder Aufgrund des Alters in schlechtem Zustand. Selbst bei guter Lagerung ist mit Schleierbildung zu rechnen. Hierfür habe ich eine Methode entwickelt, den Film dennoch mit guten Ergebnissen nutzen zu können.
Grundschleier entsteht durch den fortschreitenden Alterungsprozess des Silbermaterials. Eine zu warme Lagerung befördert diesen Prozess noch. Durch eine kleine Modifikation des A49 Entwicklers und angepasste Entwicklungsparameter ist es möglich, trotzdem hervorragende Ergebnisse zu erzielen. Zumindest unter Berücksichtigung des Alters dieses Filmmaterials.
Unter Beimischung von 1 ml "Moersch Restrainer" auf 300 ml Entwickler, wird die Ausbildung des Schleiers verringert bis nahzu verhindert. Durch eine deutlich niedrigere ISO Belichtung auf @25, wird der Abstand vom belichteten Bild auf den Schleier stark erhöht, was ein sehr gut nutzbares Negativ zur Folge hat. Die häufige Bewegung und die höhere Temperatur bilden das Bild besser aus als bei den Standard-Werten. Hier habe ich viel probiert und dies als beste Variante herausgefunden.
